Violence stirs teacher action

Prompted by the recent terrorist attack on an Athens police station, university teachers yesterday took the lead in trying to organize a movement against violence and called on other groups to join them in a common protest. The Hellenic Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (POSDEP) issued a statement saying that the latest «cycle of violence» had prompted it to take action. «This cycle is different to others mainly in that the terrorist attacks are directed at citizens, and consequently at society as a whole… society should not and cannot remain indifferent,» said POSDEP. The teachers’ union suggested that people from all walks of life should join forces to show their opposition to violence. POSDEP’s announcement came after a weekend during which students at the Athens University of Economics and Business who are affiliated to PASOK and New Democracy clashed during an effort to re-establish the student union.
