Greens part with ten Cate

In a surprise move yesterday, Panathinaikos said it was parting company with its Dutch coach Henk ten Cate in only his second season with the Athens team, which finds itself just one point behind Super League leader Olympiakos. Panathinaikos said in a statement that the 54-year-old had agreed to leave the club by mutual consent after a meeting with Chairman Nikos Pateras yesterday. The Greens said that ten Cate would be replaced by Greece’s under-21 national team coach and former Panathinaikos player Nikos Nioplias. Another former club stalwart, Polish striker Krzysztof Warzycha, will join as his assistant. «It was an honor to coach Panathinaikos and our results backed up my work,» said ten Cate. «I respect the fact that certain people are not pleased by the overall picture but myself and the staff gave everything to be successful.» The Dutchman, who was previously an assistant coach at Chelsea in England and Barcelona in Spain, achieved 10 wins from 13 games in the domestic league this season.
