River Evros…

A resident of Pytheio, in the Evros region of northeastern Greece, attempts to pump floodwater from the local railway line. There has been widespread flooding in the area after the River Evros burst its banks. According to estimates yesterday, some 20,000 hectares had been submerged. Of this, 7,500 hectares is farmland. Local authorities think the situation will get worse as more water is expected to flow into the river from neighboring Bulgaria. Dozens of homes in the Evros region have been flooded and hundreds of residents have been forced to leave their properties.
