City squares up for revamp
Environment Minister Tina Birbili yesterday announced a revamp of three squares in run-down neighborhoods close to the city center and said that the pedestrianization of a central avenue and the creation of two metropolitan parks were on the cards. Addressing a parliamentary committee on the environment, Birbili said the facelifts of squares in Aghios Panteleimonas, Attiki and Aghios Nikolaos would begin in the next few weeks. «The feasibility studies are due for completion in a month and the renovation will begin immediately,» she said. The ministry’s renovation plans are not restricted to the squares. Birbili also heralded the pedestrianization of Vassilis Olgas Avenue which runs in front of the Panathenaic Stadium, saying that the project would not affect bus and trolley bus services. Another project foresees the much-vaunted construction of metropolitan parks in Goudi, east of the center, and in the coastal suburb of Elliniko.
