Police bar protesters from the Labor Ministry

Police guard the entrance to the Labor Ministry in central Athens yesterday ahead of talks between the visiting European Union commissioner for monetary affairs, Olli Rehn, and Minister Andreas Loverdos. Dozens of demonstrators tried to force their way into the building but were pushed back by police, who fired tear gas to disperse them. Rehn later urged Greek authorities to announce additional austerity measures to slash a huge budget deficit.
