Doctors on the take get caught in the act

Two doctors from the Thriasio Hospital in Elefsina, west of Athens, were in police detention yesterday after a patient reported them to the hospital director for allegedly demanding a 2,400-euro under-the-table payment. The two female doctors, a 46-year-old supervisor and a 36-year-old specialist plastic surgeon, were arrested by an undercover policewoman who posed as the wife of the patient visiting the hospital with skin burns. According to the patient, the two doctors said they would need 2,400 euros to carry out the necessary surgery. The patient reported the alleged incident to the hospital’s new director, Angelos Liosis, and the police were informed. The undercover officer arrested the doctors after witnessing them accepting the cash that had been brought to the hospital in marked bills. Both doctors deny seeking bribes, claiming that the patient offered the payment.
