Winter fortunes and misfortunes

As this winter’s first snows fell in the hills around Athens – including Phyle on the capital’s northwestern outskirts where this young woman is pictured – a weekend cold spell caused considerable problems across the country. High winds prevented ferries from sailing for parts of the Aegean, while many roads in central and northern Greece were blocked by deep snow. Rescue teams were looking yesterday for Albanian shepherd Dimitris Tsouras, 17, in the Dervenochoria area to the west of Mt Parnes, while on Saturday night two people just managed to escape drowning when a stream in spate swept their car into the sea.
