Supersize mosquitoes swarming in Evros

Hundreds of hectares of flooded land in the northern prefecture of Evros have provided the perfect breeding ground for swarms of oversized mosquitoes, which are reportedly making life a misery for locals. Residents in the broader Evros area, particularly those whose homes are close to the banks of the river, have long had problems with mosquitoes. But the floods, caused by heavy rainfall in recent months, have boosted the quantity and size of the insects. More and more locals are covering their windows and doors with wire mesh screens to keep out the supersized mosquitoes. Residents say they cannot sit on their porches because of the pests which, some claim, are as large as the palm of a hand. Local authorities recently earmarked 200,000 euros for combating the increased mosquito population before summer, when the situation is expected to get worse with higher temperatures.
