Beach cleaner runs over pair
A Romanian woman believed to be in her 30s was killed and a man of about the same age was in critical condition yesterday after a sand-cleaning machine ran them over on a beach in the coastal suburb of Palaio Faliro early yesterday morning. The couple had been sleeping when the driver ran them over shortly after 4 a.m. on a beach in the area of Floisvos, according to police. «The driver thought they were just abandoned clothes on the beach,» said a police official, noting that the machine had had its floodlights on at the time but the operator had failed to notice the couple who were ensconced in sleeping bags. According to police, the Romanian couple had been sleeping on the beach for the past month. The woman was transferred to Nikaia General Hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The man was taken to the local Erythros Stavros Hospital where he was said to be in critical condition late yesterday. The driver was detained on charges of manslaughter.
