The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), a parasite that nests in and lives off certain species of palm, has been decimating palm trees across Greece since the introduction in 2001 of tall Egyptian palms, a drive to beautify public spaces ahead of the Athens 2004 Olympics.
