New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras chats with fellow coffee drinkers in central Athens yesterday. Samaras went on a walking tour in the city center yesterday in a bid to draw attention to the problems stores are facing due to the downturn in consumer spending. ‘We can see the depth of the recession here, where the heart of the real economy beats,’ he told reporters. Samaras called on Prime Minister George Papandreou to visit Ermou Street, Athens’s main commercial strip, and see for himself the problems experienced by store owners there.
