Theodoros Karatzas – lawyer, banker, politician – in Legion of Honor

For journalists hunting news, Theodoros Karatzas is an important figure. The successful lawyer and dedicated family man, who proved to be an acute politician and farsighted banker, knows everyone and everything and has friends from all parties. Leading figures in the economic and political life of Greece filled the French Embassy last Wednesday to join him at a joyous moment in his career. French Charge d’Affaires Luc Asselin de Williencourt, standing in for Ambassador Jean-Maurice Rippert, named Karatzas a member of France’s Legion of Honor. As deputy national economy minister in 1987-88, Karatzas helped reform the Greek banking system, and as governor of the Bank of Greece, he successfully skirted many obstacles. He also emphasized the bank’s cultural mission, with its fine work in publications and exhibitions.
