Tenant arrested for candlestick murder

A Thessaloniki man has been arrested for allegedly bludgeoning his elderly landlady to death with a candlestick over an overdue bill, police said yesterday. Afroditi Tsanaka, 76, was found dead on August 20 in her Thessaloniki apartment on 11 Pitakou Street after her neighbors, who had not seen the elderly woman for several days, called a local TV station which notified the police. As her flat showed no signs of forced entry, detectives concluded the pensioner’s murderer was someone she knew. Initially, suspicion fell on Tsanaka’s nephew. But, eventually, her tenant, Paraskevas Tsolakidis, 30, was summoned to testify and confessed to the killing. Tsolakidis told police Tsanaka had been pestering him for days for the rent and, after a heavy drinking session, he decided to kill her. Having entered her flat on the pretext of paying the rent, Tsolakidis hit Tsanaka repeatedly over the head with a candlestick. It’s time Laliotis realized that political trickery has a similar price.
