Probe ordered into industrial accidents

As one of the two Public Power Corporation (PPC) workers who were critically injured in an electricity plant accident on Saturday died yesterday, a Supreme Court prosecutor ordered investigations into a spate of recent industrial accidents in which four people died and five were injured. PPC employee Ilias Barlabas, 30, died at the Athens Ippokrateio hospital after suffering third-degree burns on 95 percent of his body at the PPC Megalopolis plant in the southern Peloponnese when he was buried in burning ash while cleaning the inside of a giant boiler. Another PPC worker who suffered similar burns was still in critical condition. Investigations were ordered yesterday into the Megalopolis accident, the death – by noxious fume inhalation on Tuesday – of three workers at the Motor Oil refinery at Aghioi Theodori in western Attica, as well as into four fatal accidents at the Olympic Village in Athens this year.
