Game warden kills alleged quail poacher

A 34-year-old man who had been using illegal methods to hunt birds near Neapoli, Laconia, died early yesterday in an incident involving local game and forestry wardens. According to the wardens’ own testimony to police, at around 5.30 yesterday morning, Constantinos Kareliotis, 34, had gone to the site to retrieve illegal devices he had placed there which emit a sound that attracts quail. Two game wardens, two forestry wardens and a local community official were apparently lying in wait for Kareliotis who failed to obey when they ordered him to stop. Apparently a fight ensued in which one of the wardens’ guns went off. Kareliotis died instantly from his wounds. Police are investigating the circumstances of his death.
