New buildings at the Air Force Academy

Air force cadets yesterday attended the groundbreaking ceremony for new buildings at the Air Force Academy at the Dhekelia air base north of Athens yesterday. The 10.5-billion-drachma construction works are to be completed in 36 months and will include an administration center, a lecture hall, professors’ offices, a small amphitheater and a canteen. The overall project will cover 20,000 square meters. The walls of two classical buildings emerged in trial trenches 800 meters from the sea, under two meters of dark sediment from a lagoon. This bears out ancient descriptions of Helike being visible underwater up to five centuries after its destruction in 373 BC.
