Call for Turks to ‘take steps’
Athens has been watching the Turkish national elections in the knowledge that a new government in Ankara will play a crucial role in determining the course of the Cyprus issue, Greek-Turkish relations and Turkish-EU ties. «Greece looks forward to the establishment of a stable government in Turkey and the continuation of the policy of cooperation and step-by-step rapprochement,» Foreign Minister George Papandreou said in a statement published in Athens’s To Vima newspaper yesterday, hours before the electoral triumph of the Islamist Justice and Development Party (AK). «We should like to see the new government take great steps and brave decisions, to solve major problems such as the Cyprus issue but also so that there can be a different approach, a transcendance of the issues which concern bilateral issues,» he said.
