Gas station strike postponed for talks

Gas stations across the country will remain open today following Saturday’s decision by protesting gas station owners to postpone until November 25 an all-day strike planned for today. The Federation of Greek Gas Stations (OBE) decided to accept a proposal by Development Minister Akis Tsochadzopoulos, made during a meeting with unionists on Friday night, to embark on negotiations aimed at reviewing protesters’ demands that the State compel oil companies to put seals on their tanks in order to curb widespread fuel smuggling. Unionists want the State to seal tanks in return for their reluctant acceptance of a government decision imposing the use of cash registers at gas stations as a way of cracking down on tax evasion. OBE has said it will only abide by the new ruling if the government reciprocates.
