AMERICAN PRAISE: The head of the US economic mission in Greece, Mr Leland Barrows, gave a speech yesterday at the Athenian branch of the Propeller Club on «Greece’s Growing Economic Strength.» Mr Barrows said, among other things, that most of the objective goals in the original reconstruction plan for Greece had been achieved. «Most of the damage done to the country in the war, the civil war and the occupation of Greece has been rectified. (…),» he said. KARAMANLIS ON THE MOVE: The minister for public works, Mr Constantine Karamanlis, accompanied by two senior ministry officials, leaves today for a tour of the Peloponnese and is due to return on Tuesday. He will inspect the road network, irrigation works at Pamisos and visit the towns of Corinth, Argos, Tripolis, Sparta and Kalamata in order to collect all the information necessary, in cooperation with local ministry services, to plan public works for the new financial year. STATE TO THE RESCUE: The Public Power Company (PPC), in a memorandum to the Coordination Ministry, is asking to be assigned the exploitation of the lignite mines in Ptolemaida, since the company contracted to do the the job has ceased all work. The Public Power Company also wants to construct part of the national power grid from Agra to Larissa. PPC is also offering to build a nitrate factory.
