Steps in the right direction

As much as some like to downplay the achievements and potential of the unity government that is currently governing Greece, the truth is that some very important laws and measures are being drawn up, voted through Parliament and put into effect.

For example, the Cabinet?s approval for the complete lifting of cabotage in the cruise industry is no mean feat considering that the previous government under George Papandreou never dared to address the issue seriously even though it had been pending for well over a decade.

Nor is it insignificant that New Democracy and the Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) have agreed to a draft law that will liberalize all closed professions, as well as a raft of other significant changes.

Finally, we are seeing the development of a climate of national consensus that will allow major changes to be made in this country that no political party was bold enough to embark on alone because of the cost this would have entailed in terms of votes.
