PM caught behind play

The extensive violence that marred the Greek Cup final between AEK and Atromitos this weekend, after fans invaded the pitch and clashed with the police as well as players, was yet another indication of the Socialist government?s failure to tackle burgeoning lawlessness.

The government did nothing to pre-empt the damage. Moreover, its reaction following the chaotic match on Saturday has been nothing short of pathetic.

The same of course goes for the much-hyped heads of Greece?s soccer federation, EPO, which has failed to live up to its role, while Greek soccer is systematically carved up by moguls using mafia-style tactics.

The ailing state of the sport in Greece sums up the current decline of Greek society. At the same time, it underscores the unbelievable failure of Prime Minister George Papandreou?s administration to deal with major problems in a decisive fashion.
