Violence must be curbed
The firebombing of a police station in the central Athenian district of Exarchia on Saturday, which resulted in three people being hospitalized with serious injuries, cannot and should not be swept under the carpet and by no means should it be allowed to go unpunished.
Three civilians sustained burns because the notorious extremists decided to launch an attack against a police precinct at the same time as a street market was taking place just outside. Meanwhile, no one took to the streets in the aftermath of the attack to protest the kind of violent and inhuman attacks that a year ago cost the lives of three employees at a Marfin Bank branch in central Athens.
Greek society appears to look at this downward spiral of violence with apathy and to tolerate the attacks of extreme-right gangs on immigrants or attacks by anarchists with Molotov cocktails on a busy street.
But this is the kind of thing that happens when politicians and the state allow a vaccum to grow in the country?s law and order. And if they don?t react to these events, the situation will become irreversible.
