Days to come are crucial
The worst kind of political adviser is he who presents himself as being a cut above the rest and ends up leading the politician to destruction.
Such are those trying to persuade Prime Minister George Papandreou that he can spin a major haircut to Greece?s debt into an important victory and that he can carry on governing just like he did six months or a year ago.
Things have changed, however, and today?s state of affairs demands major decisions.
The government has proved unable to handle difficult missions that require coordination, decisive management and planning. On a political level it has wasted and spent nearly all of its political capital through delays, retractions and mistakes.
A strong government, both on the political and the technocratic level, will be required the day after major decisions are finally made, and today?s style of governance just won?t cut it.
The risk of failure is huge, and everyone agree that if this endeavor fails, the next step will be exiting the eurozone. Neither Papandreou nor anyone else should forget this in the coming days and weeks.
