OPINION

In union there is strength

Something has gone horribly wrong in Greek society: Thugs of the far right and left are settling accounts on city streets, hyperbole and extremism are prevailing in public life, while the political parties are fighting over nonexistent debates, totally oblivious to the fact that the country is on the brink of a systemic collapse.

Crazily enough, the EU is now facing a major debt crisis, realizes its mistakes and is willing to help by incorporating Greece into a broader bailout mechanism.

We appear to be doing our best to miss out on this chance. At this late hour, our political powers, led by New Democracy, must rally their forces and pledge that after the elections the country will have a national unity government. While historical responsibility lies with the people, in the next few days Antonis Samaras, Evangelos Venizelos and Fotis Kouvelis must prove they place saving the country above party and personal ambition.
