OPINION

The people have spoken

Greece?s voters have made their point. They have given most votes to New Democracy and a clear mandate to pro-European parties to fight together to keep Greece in the eurozone. No one has the right to betray this trust and mandate.

This land needs a government with the broadest possible support and involving politicians and technocrats. PASOK ought to back such an administration and throw its weight behind a great national effort. Any kind opportunistic tactics will jeopardize the country?s interests. The same applies to Democratic Left, notwithstanding some understandable limitations.

For its part, SYRIZA must fulfill its role as the main opposition, but within the contours of our representative democracy. Greece cannot tolerate a fresh division or civil confrontation. The people have judged that SYRIZA is not ready to govern and that many of its officials are beyond logical or responsible territory.

Finally, our international partners must give their full support to the new government. Insisting on dogmatic recipes will only bolster the fringes and undermine the influence of the pro-European majority.
