Insecurity versus protection
There?s been a lot of talk among politicians recently over the social injustices brought about by Greece?s bailout agreement. Nevertheless, most chose to turn a blind eye to one of the biggest injustices, which is in fact the result of their own effort and obsession: It is extremely unfair for a doctor, a policeman, a military man or a judge to see their salary go down while another group of workers still get paid by the state for doing next to nothing. Some of these people are in fact employed by state departments that are no longer in operation.
It is outrageous that when hundreds of thousands in the private sector have lost their jobs, there?s a certain type of Greek citizen that enjoys protected status even if they get no performance assessment whatsoever, even if they don?t even bother to show up for work.
It?s high time our politicians shed this taboo of protecting their own and got to work on a fairer and more effective remedy. Should they show courage and make the effort to explain it to the people, they will find the vast majority to be on their side.
