CONQUERORS’ LOGIC: Istanbul, 1 – The following telegram, sent to Ecumenical Patriarch Athinagoras by Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes before his departure from the Patriarchate in Istanbul for London, has just been released: «The great significance and the consequences of the sack of Constantinople results from the fact that 500 years ago a major step was made toward establishing in the city the principles of freedom of thought and a tolerance for culture, principles which in many parts of the world have not been secured even today. (signed) Affectionately and respectfully, Adnan Menderes.» GREEK-TURKISH EXERCISES: Yesterday the combined naval exercises between Greece and Turkey continued in the Sea of Crete under the command of Vice Admiral Zeppos. PAO-OLYMPIAKOS 1-1: Yesterday the Greek championship match between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos was played at the Panathinaikos Stadium, refereed by Mr Petridis. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. PAO’s goal was scored by Asimakopoulos in the 43rd minute of the first half with a truly remarkable shot. The Olympiakos goal was s cored by Davvidas in the first minute of the second half. EMIGRATION: About 270 Greek emigrants have left to begin new lives in Australia on board the ocean liner Seven Seas. The Australian government has said it will accept another 300 Greek immigrants during the month of June.
