List inquiry should not overshadow real issues

Parliament has voted, and the way that the list of Greek depositors at HSBC in Switzerland has been handled over the past two years will be investigated by a preliminary inquiry committee and judicial authorities to determine whether there is a case for criminal charges to be filed and if so, against whom.

Regardless of the course that developments take on this front, the country is on a very specific course right now that will hopefully lead to stability and growth. Under no circumstances can it be be allowed to come to a halt or be derailed by other issues. Society and the political system cannot be held hostage by the Lagarde list.

The truth of course, should eventually come out and the punishment of any likely wrongdoers ought to be stern and just. But both the government and the opposition have much more pressing issues at hand that cannot be ignored as the lights remain fixed on one issue alone.
