Scaring off investors
Events like the arson attack at the premises of Hellas Gold at the Skouries gold mine in Halkidiki, northern Greece, on Sunday should under no circumstances be allowed to be repeated.
Our democracy has laws in place and the state is here to impose these laws. Where and when an investment will take place is up to the state and justice. Under no circumstances can an investment be allowed to become the target of an armed group.
Greece desperately needs to create jobs for its millions of unemployed. No investor, whether from home or abroad, is ever going to spend any money in a country that allows such violent scenes to take place at the worksite of such a major investment.
All of us – parties, unions, local communities – must show restraint in the way we conduct our public protests. Because if we don’t, Greece will gradually turn into a brutish, impoverished jungle.
