Not rank and file

It was high time that the Education Ministry decided to create a separate category for military academies in the country’s national entrance exams for tertiary education.

The new scheme is set to go into effect as of this year, when the university entrance exams begin on May 17.

Under the system that has been in effect to date it was common for students who had absolutely no interest in a military career making the grade for the armed forces and deciding to join just so that they could enjoy the benefits of having a public sector job for life.

As is the case in most other parts of the world, Greece should have a system of educational selection and entry that attracts people to this vital and extremely demanding sector who are committed to the job and who have what it takes to become valuable members of the armed forces.
