OPINION

Same old garbage?

The government has been citing scientific studies to justify its latest decision to locate and start up the operation of waste recycling units. Residents of the districts in which these units are to be located also call upon scientific studies (or opinions) to substantiate their vehement protests against the political decision in question. It seems that politicians also have the last word when it comes to determining which of the two sides is in the right in this particular dispute. Whoever else intervenes in this argument, by expressing an opinion about one of the relevant issues – either for reasons of political gain or in an attempt to show sensitivity and learning – can only cause more confusion to the existing chaos. However, there are certain other parameters which we must not overlook. For example, how can we have faith in the assurances of the government that all the required health and safety regulations will be adhered to, when in many other cases of similar significance – regarding public health, the environment and quality of life – it has shown such outrageous indifference? A case in point is the recycling affair. We were bombarded with advertising, many politicians made a stand on the matter, special recycling bins appeared in a few neighborhoods, and that was about it! The state forgot itself… and us in the process.
