Never again

The state must make sure that events such as those that took place in the Peloponnese on Wednesday – when three foremen in Manolada shot at migrant farm workers when they demanded to be paid six months’ worth of unpaid wages, sending 30 of them to hospital – are never repeated.

No one has the right to write their own laws and to enforce them, usurping one of the most crucial functions of the state, anywhere in Greece.

The inhumanity and brutality of the acts against the protesting workers – and it is irrelevant whether they were in the country legally with proper work papers or not – is the kind of thing that if not dealt with swiftly and dynamically may go on to feed even worse behavior on a larger scale.

The state must act, fast and decisively, because we should never again see the terrible scenes we saw broadcast from the region.
