ADLAI STEVENSON: Yesterday at 6.15 p.m. the leader of the Democratic Party and former US presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson arrived in Athens by air from Belgrade. Stevenson is on a tour of the world to examine the international situation firsthand. DEMOTIC GREEK: Education Minister Mr Constantine Kallias last night made the following announcements regarding a campaign on the part of the opposition newspapers regarding the announcement that new reading books are to be compiled for primary schools: «(…) As for the substance of the issue, I think that it is incomprehensible for there to be any discussion of doing away with the demotic language, since the announcement calls for the pure language spoken around the country and not arbitrary fabrications, particularly when it is clear that what is meant by this is the language in our folk songs and writings in the demotic language by our most distinguished authors and poets. (…)» METAXAS ARCHIVES: Mrs Lela I. Metaxa has donated part of the personal archive of the late Ioannis Metaxas to the state general archives (…). «(…) The donation has been made on the express condition that the archive remains inaccessible to the public for another six years as of today.» SENTENCE PASSED: Spyros Kambanakis has been sentenced in Piraeus to three months’ imprisonment for collecting money in several districts of Piraeus last December in aid of exiled communists.
