Silencing the rumor mill

A series of monstrous rumors have spread across the country regarding the demands being made by Greece’s international creditors, known as the troika. The latter bears its own responsibility in this matter as it speaks with many voices, often creating confusion and sometimes angering public opinion through talk of new measures for raising public revenues.

The troika needs to clarify its position. The situation is deteriorating as all sorts of rumors are disseminated on the Internet through irresponsible and dangerous channels. There’s talk regarding closing down airports at remote Greek islands one day, followed by unfounded rumors of troika demands reaching impossible levels the next.

A united government front setting the red lines of negotiation while distinguishing between truths and lies would, of course, help in terms of stabilizing the situation.

What Greeks truly cannot stand right now is talk of new measures. Above all, they don’t wish to feel any uncertainty with regard to what lies ahead in terms of future tax hikes as well as salary and pension cuts.
