Need for clarity and determination
Greece faces the risk of a prolonged and painful crisis. The political class, particularly several ruling government officials, are in a panic. The country’s international lenders, the EU and the IMF, are demanding political and social measures which are mostly unfeasible.
Meanwhile, several critics appear to be conspiring against the power-sharing administration, as if toppling this government could dig the country out of the mess.
We ought to realize that there are no easy solutions out there. This is after all reflected in the sterile rejectionism of Greece’s leftist opposition which has so far failed to come up with any realistic policy proposals.
The political class must get its act together. The prime minister must address voters in a straightforward and determined manner. The path to reform passes through political stability and responsible, tough bargaining with our creditors.
