Putting the message across
One senior government minister likes to say that all of Greece pretty much operates along the lines of a closed-shop profession. It is indeed quite shocking that after four years of reforms many sectors still enjoy significant privileges or preferential treatment.
Vested interests still have great leverage and the power to influence or resist government decisions. Citizens, on the other hand, are not really aware of the damage done by such distortions to the free market or they do not know how they can put pressure in the right direction.
The country’s conservative-led administration must maximize its efforts to promote much-needed structural reforms. At the same time, however, it needs to explain the reasons for this to every single one of Greece’s citizens instead of just pointing the finger at troika officials.
Pushing with the debt-hit nation’s reform agenda is after all the only way the government, or any government in fact, can cement its credibility and attract rational voters.
