Cuts that defy logic
One of the crazy things to have happened in this country during the ongoing sovereign debt crisis is the irrational reduction in the differences between the incomes of high-ranking military officials and their newcoming subordinates, an issue which has also been observed in other parts of the public sector.
So how exactly how did this come about?
As salaries were being slashed at the top of the pay scale, starting salaries at the bottom were not cut at the same rate.
This has led to absurdly small gaps in pay. The chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, for instance, is currently earning only very slightly more than an army captain.
There is little doubt that this kind of situation is wrong, as it demolishes any notion of hierarchy while abolishing all rules of common sense.
This kind of injustice and irrationality ought to be rectified as soon as possible.
