A potential opportunity
The whole mess with Panayiotis Baltakos is, in a way, a first-class opportunity for Prime Minister Antonis Samaras – who has shouldered an extremely difficult mission – to draw a line and move forward with party and government officials who express the values of the pro-European middle class and who operate within the framework of the country’s institutions.
That is what the country needs right now and that is what Samaras should be banking on. Bipolar systems of power rarely survive for very long.
Samaras has shown that he can surpass himself and overcome mentalities that belong in the past when the country’s interest is at stake.
It would be devastating for the country to enter a new phase of serious political instability just when the hard work of the past few years is starting to pay off.
With the right people by his side and in key posts, Samaras can lead the country through the next crucial phase and lead the large mass of people who believe in democracy and in the country’s European prospects.
