A visit of major importance
An official visit and statements made by United States Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday and the day before in Cyprus reconfirm the importance of the island nation in the international energy arena.
Seen from a Cypriot perspective, the American top official’s visit is an extremely promising development with regard to the island’s present and future position in world affairs.
In a broader sense, however, it also concerns Greece, a country which is connected to the Eastern Mediterranean basin and where there have been credible indications regarding the existence of hydrocarbon reserves as well.
This fact alone demands that the Greek leadership make serious efforts if the country is to develop and manage its geographical position and rich underwater natural reserves, provided of course that these actually exist.
One way or another, however, for this to happen, the country’s political stability needs to be maintained.
