Clear position, serious choices
Speculation abounds regarding the upcoming cabinet reshuffle.
Old-school partisan aides close to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras are pushing the premier to get rid of all the moderate, serious ministers who have handled cases that came at a political cost. If this happens it will no doubt be a completely self-destructive move that will lead to losses on all fronts.
There are also those suggesting the reinstatement of various conservative New Democracy and socialist PASOK party officials who belong to the local political scene’s recycled and worn-out category.
Public opinion will no longer tolerate this type of politician being appointed to government positions. Rather, people would like to see serious, hardworking, honest people in key posts. Appointments which are the product of party power balances and compromise will do nothing but anger the Greek people.
Samaras is faced with a very complicated puzzle, but given the right moves he could secure the valuable political time he needs, provided, of course, that he insists upon a clear position and a serious choice of people.
