Daring to do the obvious

If the Greek political system wishes to enjoy even the slightest bit of credibility vis-a-vis Greek cities, it ought to start by doing the obvious.

Alongside the evaluation process in the civil service, it ought to take care of its own backyard of personal and family favors – Parliament – where relatives of former House speakers, associates of supposedly anti-systemic parties and assistants to former premiers are employed.

Certainly many Parliament employees are doing a great job and perhaps don’t owe anyone anything. Those people have nothing to fear in the eventuality of a truly objective evaluation.

Here’s a landmark opportunity for the country’s political staff to demonstrate that something is really changing in Greece, by dismissing from the House anyone whose position constitutes an obvious political favor – be they a spouse, son or daughter of some almighty politician.

The question, of course, remains: Will they dare to do so?
