Friends of the people?

Certain politicians who served as ministers in New Democracy and PASOK governments are behaving in a provocative manner, to say the least.

Acting as the brave voes of memorandums and austerity, they wish to come across as “the friends of the people.”

A bit of self-criticism would be appropriate, considering that they were a part of the system which brought Greece to the brink of bankruptcy.

They crossed every boundary to appoint people to the public sector and utility companies, they approved irrational raises for civil servants and they excelled in old-style partisanship. Some rushed to ally with opposition SYRIZA, smelling new power. Others have comfortably settled down as MPs and are criticizing the administration from the safe side.

However Greeks can sense hypocrisy and have reached their own conclusions. Let us hope this is reflected in the next round of elections and that these so-called “friends of the people” end up going home once and for all.
