Waste not, want not

Attica’s governor-in-waiting, Rena Dourou, announced Thursday that her first task when she takes up the job later this year will be a radical restructuring of the regional authority’s waste management plan.

Dourou beat incumbent Yiannis Sgouros in a runoff vote on May 25 to become SYRIZA’s first governor of Attica. She revealed her plans to overhaul waste management in greater Athens while she was in the presence of the executive committee of POE-OTA, the federation of local government employees’ unions, yesterday.

However, when citizens hear such grand schemes they have come to expect that this means years of delay in dealing with key problems, such as what happens to their garbage. It would be no surprise to see no solution being found at all. We hope we are proved wrong but the impression given by Dourou’s meeting with POE-OTA president Themis Balasopoulos does not inspire us with much confidence.
