The polls can wait
It is clearly obvious that certain ministers and deputies are trying to appear as though they are on the side of the masses, making populist statements, because they consider it very likely that they will not survive a general election should it happen in the fall.
They are putting off every important decision that needs to be made until “after November” or making promises of changes and special amendments to laws that they know full well they can never deliver.
Early elections would be nothing short of catastrophic at this time for Greece given the combination of challenges it is facing. The still-fragile economy is only just starting to show signs of recovery and the country is only just beginning to regain some of the credibility it lost in the eyes of its international partners.
Even the slightest indication that Greece may go to the polls and be plunged into a new phase of political uncertainty would be enough to undermine the spirit of trust that is gradually being built, not just outside the country, but inside as well.
