KARAMANLIS TO THE FORE: (Kathimerini’s top story) The minister Mr Constantine Karamanlis has announced a program of road and land reclamation works. It is a major effort to increase production. A total of 210 billion drachmas are budgeted for roadworks, 30 billion for bridges, 13 for port construction, seven for airports, six for public buildings and 89 for land reclamation works. The public works minister will organize construction on site. CAVENDISH CANNON: The new United States ambassador to Greece, Mr Cavendish Cannon, arrived in Athens yesterday on board the ocean liner Nea Hellas (…). As he emerged from the Piraeus central customs house, the American ambassador was warmly greeted by the crowds that had filled Aghios Nikolaos Square in order to welcome 445 of their relatives from the USA who had also traveled on board the Nea Hellas. STATE REFINERY: A government official, referring to the announcement of an international competition for the construction of a petroleum refinery, said that this was an event of historic significance in the effort to develop production and create jobs for Greeks. The founding of a petroleum refinery is a step toward Greece’s entry into the category of economically developed countries.
