GREECE, 1951: From an editorial in Kathimerini titled «The other Greece»: «(…) Here in Athens a large number of people are without doubt having a hard time. They earn very low wages, but to a certain extent they are making do. Very few people are actually starving and they are not much in evidence. Large crowds are attending theaters, cinemas and football matches, not before having enjoyed a meal of course, whether fresh or frozen, meat, beans or cauliflower. (…). That’s the situation in Athens and its surroundings, up to the points reached by city buses (…). But only a few kilometers outside Athens (…) a lot of people are starving, they have no clothing or homes. They dampen their bread with their own sweat, and it is their sweat that is watering the soil. (…) Farmers grow wheat but have no bread to eat, they grow cotton but have no shirt to wear.» MELINA: A letter just received from Paris is full of news of the premiere of the comedy «Le Moulin de la Galette» (…). Melina (Mercouri) received enthusiastic applause. Her role gave her the opportunity to interpret a wide range of psychological states and she was a great success, acting with ease and in excellent French, with just a trace of an accent. Yesterday, senior ministry officials said the matter should be settled to the taxpayers’ satisfaction before February. Sources said the government’s final decision on the matter would depend on a series of anticipated appeals by municipal authorities.
