Robber strikes near guarded Polytechnic

Apparently undeterred by the presence of scores of policemen at the Polytechnic building two streets away, an armed man robbed a guarded Exarchia post office yesterday and escaped on a motorbike he had left outside. Witnesses said that just after 1 p.m., a man drove up to the Zaimi Street post office on a large white trail bike. Without taking off his helmet, he walked into the building and pulled a pistol on the armed police guard. Keeping the policeman in his sights, he took a hand grenade out of his other pocket and threatened to throw it unless everybody stayed still. The robber then gave the cashier a shoulder bag and told him to fill it. Having bagged about 4.5 million drachmas, the man slowly walked backward to the door, got onto the motorbike and drove off. Although heavy detachments of riot police and regular officers were on duty at the nearby Polytechnic, the robber evaded arrest. One could say that such conspiratorial, oppressive and terrorist systems are surrounded by a huge myth mainly because of the unbelievable events from which they emerge. Their violent methods and strange and irrational practices shock and instill fear among their people. Shock and fear are enough to create a myth which then gets propagated, becomes ever more distorted and complicated, and which grows in size as it spreads from mouth to mouth over the course of time.
