Shut down the circus

Greece’s claims for reparations from Germany for the atrocities and destruction wreaked by the Nazis in World War II is a very serious affair that should be handled responsibly and boldly by the Greek state.

The present SYRIZA administration is not the first government to have prepared an argument on the Greek position and to take legal steps. But a serious legal claim is one thing and the circus that has been set up around the issue for the sake of domestic consumption and vote-mongering is quite another.

Greece can and must proceed in a professional manner and must build its case on the basis of solid evidence, before bringing it to the attention of the world and international courts.

All the rest of the rigmarole that we see and hear is not just standing in the way but also making Greece something of a laughing stock in the rest of Europe.
