Escalating violence
The events at Wednesday’s student elections – when groups of hooded youths interrupted proceedings at Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University, the National Technical University of Athens and the Athens University of Economics and Business, verbally assaulting students and trashing the premises – are completely unacceptable and dangerous.
The number of attacks we have witnessed against political parties’ student representatives over the past few weeks is unprecedented. It shows a significant escalation of a phenomenon that has been evident at Greek universities for years and the longer we allow it to spin out of control without taking steps to curb it, the faster our universities will slide down the slippery slope.
The government must join forces with the opposition and university authorities to come up with a solution to this increasing violence at the country’s universities.
