The spoils of power

This past Monday proved to be a crucial, if not landmark, day for the country’s future as the eurozone’s mighty powers met to discuss the Greek crisis.

At the same time, a meeting was also taking place at the Maximos Mansion in Athens. The latter gathering focused on changes in the top brass at public utility companies and other state institutions – in other words, getting the coalition government’s own people into executive positions, an identical procedure to the one used by the previous administration and the one before that.

Party officials, failed politicos and relatives of leading government officials are landing comfortable positions in key departments without anyone caring whether or not they have the necessary qualifications. It is both sad and unacceptable that the same phenomena persist even today.

The current situation demonstrates that the political system, including the supposedly anti-systemic one, has learnt nothing from past experience and is simply carrying on the good-old tradition of the country’s former leaders.
